Add comments

The Health Ministry has decided to increase the retirement period of the health service up to 65 years.

The related memorandum has been presented to the Cabinet. The proposal has been made taking cognizance of the prevailing vacancies in the Nursing Service. Accordingly if the Cabinet nod was received for this proposal, nurses who exceeded 60 years can serve up to 65 years according to their wish. Minister Maithripala Sirisena claims that there are about 3000 vacancies in the Nursing Service in Government Hospitals throughout the country.

The vacancies exist due to the annual retirement of nurses and also nurses taking up foreign jobs on paid leave. At present around 30 thousand nurses are serving in Government Hospitals.
