Measures have been taken to immediately halt the import of bean seeds. Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has instructed the Director General for Agriculture to suspend the import of bean seeds.
The Agriculture Minister issued these instructions to the Director General of Agriculture Dr. Rohan Wijekoon at a function held at the head office of the Hadabima Authority at Getambe marking its 35th Anniversary. The Minister revealed at this function of plans to gradually reduce the import of vegetables and fruits.
At present the country possesses 25,000 kilograms of high quality bean seeds. As such the Minister said that there is no need of importing bean seeds.
