The Education Minister has emphasized that he will not at all obstruct the educational opportunities of the village children.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena expressed this view to brief the media on the report of the National Education Commission on changes to be effected to the Grade Five Scholarship Scheme.
The Minister displaying a report said that it is clearly mentioned that an examination should be held for one hour to measure the knowledge level of the children overcoming their mental pressure and the burden of the parents. The educationists of the Commission have clearly mentioned in their recommendations as to how the knowledge of the children should be measured according to their ages. The Commission made recommendations that whether it is necessary to further conduct this examination by the year 2016, when the 1000 schools within the villages receive the necessary resources.
The Education Minister said that an examination will be held to measure the knowledge level of the students, to increase the scholarship allowance provided to talented students and also to permit those who wish to come to Colombo, replacing the system of exerting pressure on the village students. A majority in urban areas, based on their financial strength impart the necessary education to their children without permitting them to take the Grade Five Scholarship Examination. He emphasized that they would not mediate in obstructing the opportunities available for the children of the villages.
