The President declares open the Kegalla Outer Circle road safeguarding the pristine glory of the Kegalla town, marking another watershed in road development.
The expenditure incurred by the Highways Ministry on this 4.2 kilometre alternative road newly constructed as a solution to traffic congestion on the Colombo-Kandy Highway in the Kegalla town was 2180 million rupees. It includes a flyover which is 70 metres long with a height of 55 feet. This site had been earlier identified as a location where heavy traffic congestion is being experienced when passing the Kegalla town in the Colombo-Kandy Highway. This alternative road has been built on the sidelines of the 2014 Deyata Kirula National Development Exhibition. The road could be accessed at Meepitiya and enter the Kandy road again from the Ranwala Junction. The public travelling on the Colombo-Kandy Highway are breathing a sigh of relief with the opening of this alternative road by the President yesterday.
Although many solutions were proposed for several years to the heavy traffic congestion experienced on the A-1 Colombo-Kandy Highway, all of them were restricted only to proposals but were not put into action. But solutions had been found for many routes in the island as in the case of the solution found to the traffic congestion within the Kegalle town along the Colombo-Kandy Highway, after President Rajapaksa assumed office.
In the meantime, President Rajapaksa also declared open yesterday the Kegalla Nidahas Mawatha which reflects the history and pride of the Kegalla town. This road was also reconstructed parallel to the Deyata Kirula National Development Exhibition. This Nidahas Mawatha is a significant impetus for the traffic congestion experienced along the Colombo-Kandy as well as the Kegalla Bullathkohupitiya roads. 148 million rupees was spent on the construction of this road.
