Russia has vehemently rejected attempts made by the international community to interfere in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka under the pretext of human rights.
Director of the Department for Humanitarian Cooperation and Human Rights of the Russian Foreign Ministry Anatoly Viktorov strictly opposed such moves addressing a media conference in Colombo today.
Anatoly Viktorov said that the international dialogue in the sphere of human rights is infested with politicization and double standards. They are of the view that, although human rights could be a legitimate concern of international community, they must not be used as a pretext for interference in internal affairs or even rose, use of force.
He said some countries often threat or imply sanctions against other countries which they consider to be violators of human rights. Russia rejects such an approach. Those sanctions only increase suffering of people and contribute to aggravating their situation. He mentioned that Russia’s position on country-specific human rights situations is know well. They support only those resolutions in the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly which enjoy the support and consent of the country concerned.
Mr.Viktorov emphasized that no country is free of human rights violations. As such he added that they reject the practice of teaching, naming and shaming, which actually discredits the human rights cause.
