US Assistant Secretary of State witnesses ground situation during a visit to the North

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal tours Jaffna.


Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs in the United States Department of State, Nisha Biswal who is visiting the island undertook a tour of Jaffna this morning. After arriving at the Palaly Airport, the US diplomat met the Bishop of Jaffna Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam and had a brief discussion. Thereafter she called on Northern Governor G.A. Chandrasiri and made inquiries into the prevailing situation in the Northern Province. The Governor gave a detailed description on the short term as well as long term programmes the Government had mooted for Northern Development and for the upgrading of civilian life. Nisha Biswal returned to Colombo this afternoon after concluding her Jaffna visit.


In the meantime, addressing a news briefing held in Colombo today, the US Assistant Secretary of State said that The United States had no intention of marginalizing Sri Lanka. She pointed out that the US Government will extend every possible support to the Sri Lankan Government. Nisha Biswal was optimistic that all people would reasonably enjoy the dividends of reconciliation.
