The Consumer Affairs Authority will hereafter fix prices for imported drugs.
Minister Johnston Fernando revealing this to journalists at a news conference today, said that the related gazette notification has been issued.
The President informed him over the phone that a 400 percent profit was being earned through the sale of some drugs and this was very unreasonable. As such he informed to immediately introduce a price control. After deliberating with the Health Minister, agreement was reached not to permit an increase in the prices of drugs from the 4th of this month.
A one rupee tablet cannot be increased even by 10 cents. Permission has to be sought for any increase. A separate official under the Consumer Affairs Authority will be appointed to consider it. The Minister added that this price control is limited only to importers.
