375 which were closed down in the North due to terrorism have been reopened. Four billion rupees has been spent on the development of education under the “Uthuru Wasanthaya” programme. Many schools within the Northern Province were shut down following terrorist activities. However, it had been possible to re-open 375 schools within the last four years. The Northern Education Ministry said that these schools have been given an opportunity to engage in their educational activities with unbridled freedom. These details surfaced during the meeting held at the Northern Governor’s office under the auspices of Governor G.A. Chandrasiri to review the progress of education in the Northern Province. It was revealed at this meeting that four billion rupees had ben expended to upgrade educational facilities within the Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Vauniya, Jaffna and Mannar District in the North. 999 schools are operative in the Northern Province and the total number of students pursuing studies is 252 thousand. A significant growth has been achieved in the educational sphere in the North during the last four years with the provisions of all necessary facilities to the schools. The Northern Education Ministry said that the results of the Grde Five Scholarship and the GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level Examinations are a fitting example.
