Dark memories on 20th May

The carnage and destruction caused to public property during this period of terrorism which plagued the country for 30 years, is inestimable.


It was with much dedication by the Commander in Chief and the heroic soldiers that terrorism was totally wiped out from the country. If not, no one could estimate the damage that would have been inflicted by these blood thirsty monsters to the motherland.


The tiger terrorists who exploded a landmine in the Batticaloa area on 20th May 1985 took away the lives of five war heroes and thus embarked on their killing spree on this day throughout the dark era. On the same day two more war heroes were killed in another terrorist assault in the Trincomalee area.


On 20th May 1987, the motherland lost the valuable services of six war heroes in a terrorist ambush in the Thondamanaru area. Eravur was the next target of these barbaric terrorists. 13 innocent civilians were killed in two bombs which exploded in the Eravur area. On 20th May 1997, the terrorists unleashed a claymore mine attack in the Bu-Oya area in Vavuniya. As a result three brave soldiers made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland.


On the same day four war heroes were killed in another terrorist assault in the Nugetenna area. Five war heroes were killed in a small weapons attack mooted by the terrorists in the Kilinochchi area on 20th May 1998.


Terrorism which was fast spreading like a pestilence in this manner was routed on 18th May 2009. By then these blood thirsty monsters had taken a way a total of 52 lives which included 14 civilians. The other 38 were heroic soldiers.


The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the humanitarian operation due to the unwavering leadership of President Rajapaksa, who is also the Commander in Chief and the appropriate guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, killed the murderous tiger leader at the Nanthikadal Lagoon and ended the fear psychosis era. If not the country would have become a land of the dead. Peace has now dawned in the country and the entire nation is now enjoying the peace dividends for the past five years.


The present Government headed by the people’s leader has paved the way to make it enduring peace. But it is sad to note that certain local as well as foreign forces are determined to destroy this peace. They are making false and unfounded allegations on these war heroes.


It is the courage and bravery displayed by the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country that are being reminisced in this feature. It cannot be deleted by anyone. Whatever was said by anyone, the war heroes who protected the country are immortal. It should be mentioned that the memories of these war heroes of the era who gave up their lives on behalf of genuine freedom, will be continued to be refreshed in this feature also from tomorrow.
