Devotees commemorate Wesak giving pride of place to religious observances.

Devotees thronged temples in view of Wesak Full Moon Poya Day.


They are engaged in religious observances by observing Sil and participating in meditation programmes.

Our correspondents mentioned that from the early hours of today, devotees descended upon temples to observe Sil. They were also seen participating in meditation programmes and also listening to Dhamma sermons.

Our correspondents reported that particularly the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Jaya Sri Mahabodhi in Anuradhapura, the Polonnaruwa Sacred Area, the Raja Maha Vihare in Kelaniya, the Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihare, the Matara Bodhiya, the Kalutara Bodhiya, Kirivehera in Kataragama, Mahinyangana, the Nagadeepa, the Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihare and other temples were filled with devotees, participating in religious observances.

The Sri Pada pilgrimage season which commenced on the last Unduwap Full Moon Poya Day also drew to a close this Wesak Poya. After the conduct of the traditional religious observances, the Statue of God Saman the Relics Casket and the Sacred Objects were brought in a special Perahera to the Sri Pada Dharma Centre in Nallathanniya. Thereafter the status, the Relics Casket and the Sacred Objects will be places at the Sri Pada Raja Maha Vihare at Galpottawala in Pelmadulla.

The “Amadam Sisilasa” Dhamma Sermon being held on every Full Moon Poya Day at Temple Trees was conducted with the participation of President Rajapaksa today. It was the 123rd in the series of Dhamma sermon. The Dhamma Sermon was delivered by the Acting Mahanayake of the Kotte Kalyani Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha the Ven. Dr. Ittepane Dhammalankara Thera. The First Lady and many Parliamentarians were among the large gathering present to listen to the Dhamma Sermon.

In the meantime, the “Savanak Res” programme telecast by the Independent Television Network on every Poya Day was aired live from the Hunupitiya Gangarama Temple. Various Pinkamas and Dhamma discussions were held centering the Vihare. The programmes were organized under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent of the Gangarama Temple, the Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thera.
