Attempts made to smuggle out gold worth 13.5 million rupees have been foiled. The gold was seized at the Katunayake. Customs Media Spokesman Leslie Gamini said that the persons involved in this smuggling racket were apprehended following searches carried out last afternoon and in the night. The Customs Media Spokesman said three Sri Lankans were arrested last night Katunayake International Airport when attempting to smuggle 24 gold slabs out of the country. He said among the three suspects were two women and a man aged 37. They were residents of Ragama and Kandana. Mr. Gamini said the suspects were arrested at the departure lounge while awaiting a flight to Mumbai. The gold slabs weighing 2.4 Kilos had been concealed in their shoes.
