The first flag marking World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day has been pinned on the President.
The first flag of the Flag Day marking World Red Cross Day today was pinned on to President Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat this morning. Youth President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Ruwan Mapa pinned the first flag on the President. A memento was also presented to the President.
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is being commemorated by National Red Cross Societies, Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Crescent Society of 189 countries.
This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize. The Day is dedicated to alleviating human suffering, upholding human dignity, protecting life, and preventing emergencies and natural disasters such as flood, epidemics, and earthquakes.
Present at the Presidential Secretariat on the occasion was President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Jagath Abeysinghe and its representatives.
