Today marks the 23rd death anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi,
the sixth Prime Minister of India. He was assassinated on May 21st 1991 by an LTTE suicide bomber.
Rajiv Gandhi came under an LTTE suicide bomb attack while he was engaged in an election campaign in Sriperumbudu in Tamil Nadu in the year 1991. Born into the first family of Congress as the son of Indira Gandhi and Feroz Gandhi on 20 August 1944, Rajiv became prime minister after his mother was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984, October 31.He fought his first election from Amethi seat, where he defeated Sharad Yadav.
Like his mother, Rajiv played a big role in promoting technology and industries in the country and eradicating rural poverty.
With the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi it was explicitly clear how LTTE terrorists were active in the international arena. 46 persons were also killed in the suicide attack unleashed on Rajiv Gandhi.
