People in this country can never forget the barbarity and the ruthlessness of terrorism.
People who were under the grip of terrorists were rescued by the soldiers led by the Commander in Chief. The country achieved peace as a result of many sacrifices. On the 01st June 1983, LTTE terrorists took the lives of 2 soldiers in Vauniya. LTTE terrorists attacked soldiers at Muhamalei in Jaffna killing 6 soldiers on 01st June 1992. Six soldiers sacrificed their lives for the motherland when LTTE terrorists launched a mortar attack on the same day in Mullaitivu. 12 soldiers were lost to the country on 01st June 1995, when LTTE terrorists attacked them at Thiriyaaya and Mannar. On 01st June 1998, terrorists took the lives of 4 soldiers. An ambush by terrorists on 01 June 2001at Divulwewa, killed 6 heroic soldiers. 2 small scale businessmen were murdered by LTTE soldiers on 01 June 2006 at Bandaarikulam in Vauniya. On 01 June terrorists attacked soldiers who were protecting Thiruwegama villagers and killed 2 soldiers. The ruthless terrorism was eradicated from the motherland on 18 May 2009.By that day, on 01 June LTTE terrorists had killed 53 people including 48 soldiers and 5 civilians. The heroic soldiers who marched forward under the brave leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and on the precise directions of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, eliminated terrorism from the motherland. The victory over terrorism was achieved as a result of many sacrifices. All communities are living happily now in a free country. The patriotic people will never allow to destroy the hard won peace, although certain elements try to do so. The people have shown it by gathering around the Commander in chief and the government. We recall the dark era in dark memories to prevent reoccurrence of such a dark and destructive chapter again in the country. The photographs of those heroic soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the motherland are shown to the whole world in dark memories as a mark of respect and honour to them
