The Rajarata University has been temporarily closed. A group of students who surrounded the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University had prevented him from leaving his office last night. The decision to close the University has been taken due to the actions of the students.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ranjith Wijewardena said that the students had detained him even without permitting him to take his dinner last night.
The Vice Chancellor said that they were taken hostage from last afternoon. They were even not permitted to leave the office in the night. The students were surrounding their office and even did not permit to get down food. Also power supplies were disconnected. He said that students cannot be permitted to run the institutions according to their whims and fancies.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama said that this situation had surfaced as a result of the initiatives by a handful of students.
Prof. Hirumburegama said that the situation which prevailed at the Rajarata University from yesterday was very pathetic. Its only a handful of students that were causing chaos and paralyzing the studies of the other children. Prof. Hirimburegama said that any disputes should be sorted out through discussions. Except for some minor incidents, the University network was operating smoothly. She said that the entire network is impacted due to the behavior of a group of students.
