Thurstan student bitten by black monkey .... hospitalised
A black monkey loitering early morning last morning at Colombo, Thurstan College had bitten a student of the college and was hospitalised with serious injuries.
Mihira Sankalpa the 11 year old student studying in grade 6 of the said school had been walking towards the classroom when this black monkey which happened to be near a wall of the classroom had suddenly jumped on the body of the student. Later it had got hold of a leg of the boy and had bitten the leg causing it to bleed when other students and teachers who saw the scene had managed to chase the monkey away and after rescuing the student had taken him to hospital.
Doctors of the children's hospital of Lady Ridgeway Hospital where he was admitted said that stitches had to be applied at the injured spots.
The father of the student has even lodged a complaint with the police.
It was understood that on two previous occasions also a student of Thurstan College and a student of Royal College were bitten by this monkey. Though complaints had been made about many monkeys in great numbers wondering about on huge trees in the vicinity of Thurstan College, Royal College and the Colombo University from time to time, it is learned that the authorities have not taken action to catch these animals and release them to some other location and though the Wild Life Department had engaged in such an attempt, it had been futile.
