16 from UPFA in Opposition, 16 from Tamil, 6 from JVP
Opposition Leader chosen by Duminda
Marks scored by Chamal
The Alliance crisis which originated in the pre-election period operated during the election and is still in progress. The Alliance is suffering; being still entangled in sorting
out the knot between Mahinda and Maithri.
out the knot between Mahinda and Maithri.
As reported by now, the issue about solving the crisis regarding sharing of Ministerial posts has now come to an end and after being postponed on four occasions it has been proposed that all Ministers are to swear-in on the 4th of next month. The reason for this final delay was that the JVP had requested for a debate on the topic of increase of Ministers and that this request too has to be attended to when the parliament assembled on the 1st. In the meantime since the anniversary of the SLFP too falls on the 2nd, this event has been postponed until the 4th.
As so far reported, 16 from the United People's Freedom Alliance and 6 from the JVP and 16 from the Tamil Congress are to occupy seats in the Opposition, in which case the total would be 38 in all. Since the position of the Opposition Leader has to be nominated by a majority of the Opposition, it is quite possible that an MP from the UPFA would occupy that position. Though Mahinda Rajapaksa, Kumara Welgama and Dinesh Goonewardena's names were nominated, what General Secretary of the Alliance, Duminda Dissanayaka had said yesterday was that in the capacity of the General Secretary it would be the Opposition Leader who would be nominated by him and in his opinion he thinks it should go to Chamal Rajapaksa.
As such, it would be a strange manner where a person from the government Party would be choosing the Opposition Leader. Chamal Rajapaksa the former Speaker expressing his ideas on this subject to Mawbima Newspaper has said that he has no objection in assuming the post of Opposition Leader.
