It is reported that a small earthquake of Richter scale 3 magnitude had struck the sea surrounding the Galle district in the wee hours of the 27th instant.This had been disclosed by the authorities of geology survey and mines
bureau.It had affected 25 to 30 kilometres in the deep sea in the Galle district.The magnitude of the earthquake had been measured as 3 Richter scale by the geological scientist Mahinda Seneviratne.
He had attributed this largely as to a natural earthquake.
However it is reported that during the past 24 hours within and beyond the Indian ocean there had been some other earthquakes.The closest one had been in an island of India (Nikobar) The strongest had been reported as Richter scale 4.7 magnitude
The authorities of the geological office had added that the earthquake in Galle district may have been as side affect .The areas of sea affected had been Galle, Hikkaduwa,Rathgama,Kalegana,Baddegama,Nugaduwa, Boosa and other ares in Galle district.
