Student of Year 10 falls from footboard in train and dies

An incident is reported of a student who falls from a footboard of a train in Kelaniya area and has died as a result. Jayaweera Adhikari Isuru Rashmika Adhikari, a 15 year old schoolboy studying in the 10th Year at Ananda College, Colombo was the unfortunate victim in this instance.

A classmate of the deceased gave evidence with regard to the death in this manner: "The three of us, I, Chamli and deceased Isuru were travelling home
by train. After getting into the compartment I and Chamli were having a chat inside the compartment near the door. But Isuru was on the footboard. He was travelling leaning to one side. If he wanted he could have come inside and travelled that way too. An uncle who was behind shouted out and said that a child had fallen. We put our heads out and had a look and saw that Isuru had fallen. The uncle who shouted pulled the chain in the train but the train didn't stop. The train stopped At Kelaniya Railway Station. All of us ran and went there. Isuru was found fallen just like that. Even at that moment he wasn't dead. Later Isuru was put into a train which came after that. Later we came to know that he had died".

The schoolboy's father Sujith Nishantha (47) gave evidence and had said "The deceased is my second son. Before this he went to school by bus. From about 2 months back he had been coming home by train. He had said that it was convenient. After getting to know about this accident the Principal of the school notified me".

The autopsy of the deceased student was conducted by Colombo Deputy Judicial Medical Officer, Mrs. K.K. Juzar. Mrs. Iresha Samaraweera, Inquirer into Sudden Deaths of Colombo City who took the relevant reports and evidence given into consideration concluded that the death of the schoolboy was caused by a train accident.
