New Zealand’s Sonny Bill Williams has been named player of the year by the Rugby League International Federation. The 28-year-old forward, the first Kiwi to win the award, beat Australia’s Greg Inglis and Scotland’s Danny Brough to the title. Williams said he felt shocked and “teary” as his teammates rose and performed the haka while he was still on stage after receiving the award. Williams dedicated the honour to them. He has also been in devastating form at the World Cup and will hope to follow up the award with victory in Saturday’s final against Australia at Old Trafford.
