Its two years since the opening of the Southern Expressway. Sri Lanka’s first. Also one month has passed since the inauguration of the second expressway, the Colombo Katunayake Expressway.
The Southern Expressway opened two years ago is the first Expressway to be constructed in the island. It was on a day like today, that President Rajapaksa opened the Southern Expressway linking Colombo and Matara up to Pinnaduwa marking another milestone in the country’s road development network. The Expressway which runs from Kottawa via Kahathuduwa, Gelanigama, Dodangoda, Welipenna, Kurundugaha-hethepma and Baddegama to Pinnaduwa is earning a record income from the day of its inauguration and making a notable contribution to the national economy.
The number of vehicles which plied on the Expressway during the last two years was 7.55 million. The total income earned during this period exceeded 2.51 billion rupees. It was exactly a month back that the second Expressway, the Colombo- Katunayake Expressway was inaugurated achieving another landmark in Sri Lanka’s road network development.
The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway which was vested in the people by the President earned a record income shattering the records established by the Southern Expressway. The number of vehicles which plied on this Expressway during this month was 420,000. The income earned exceeded 116.3 million rupees.
It is with gratitude to the Government that the people travel on these Expressways within the shortest possible time, saving their valuable time. The public will be fortunate to travel on the Southern Expressway from Colombo to Matara from next January.
In the meantime plans are afoot to launch work on the Colombo-Kandy Expressway in January next year.
