A United National Party Central Provincial Councillor has made a special statement that threats against him from his party are daily on the rise and as such he has decided to remain independent.
There are also reports that more UNP Provincial Councillors have taken a decision to remain independent.
Making a special statement in the presence of Central Provincial Council Chairman Mahinda Abeykoon, United National Party Councillor Rohana Bandarayake announced that he would remain independent within the Council. He said that he was compelled to take a decision as he is facing death threats from within his party. He revealed that there are continuous death threats to him. As such he called on the Chairman of the Provincial Council to take maximum precautions in this respect.
Mahinda Abeykoon mentioned that the measures that should be taken would be discussed at the next group leaders meeting.
