Budget adopted with a majority of 95 votes

The budget for next year is approved in Parliament with a majority of votes. 155 members voted in favour of the budget, while 60 votes were cast against it. The Budget was adopted with a majority of 95 votes.


President Rajapaksa as Minister of Finance presented the 2014 budget in Parliament on the 21st of last month. Thereafter the debate on the Second Reading of Budget took place from the 22nd to the 29th of last month. Thereafter the voting on the Second Reading took place on the 29th.


The Second Reading of the Budget was approved with a majority of votes. It was followed by the Third Reading in which Committee Stage discussions took place.


The debate on the Third Reading ended this evening with President Rajapaksa making the reply speech. It was followed by the vote being taken up on the Third Reading.


All constituent parties of the Government voted in favour of the budget. The United National Party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil National Alliance voted against the budget. Accordingly the budget presented by the Government for next year was approved with a majority of 95 votes.
