Add comments

The Indian Defence Ministry has appealed to the LOK Sabha to reject a debate sought by Tamil Nadu Parliamentarians against the Government’s move to train Sri Lankan defence personnel in India.

Tamil Nadu politicos constantly protested against the imparting of training to Sri Lankan defence personnel in India. Their latest request has been made to the Indian Parliament that the matter should be debated. However, a note issued with the approval of Indian Defence Minister A.K. Anthony submitted to the Indian Parliamentary Secretary’s office has requested to disallow such a debate.

The note said the training assistance to other countries, including Sri Lanka, based on their request, is a part of ongoing defence exchanges with a number of friendly countries. Such requests are considered keeping in view their national interests. The participation of the foreign armed forces personnel in the training programmes in India is undertaken as an initiative of the military diplomacy to build goodwill with the countries to which, such training opportunities are provided. Similarly, the note by the Defence Ministry mentioned that the Indian armed forces personnel are also deputed to training to various countries.
