The Budgets of the Nuwara Eliya and Badulla Municipal Councils have been approved with a majority vote.
The budget of the Badulla Municipal Council for next year was adopted with a majority of five votes today. Mayor Upali Nissanka presented the Budget to the Council. 14 votes were cast in favour of the budget while the number of votes cast against it was only five.
In the meantime the 2014 budget of the Nuwra Eliya Municipal Council was unanimously approved. While Mayor Mahinda Dodampegama presented the budget, all Councillors other than the Opposition Leader voted in favour of the budget. The Opposition Leader abstained from voting. Government as well as opposition councilors said that they took the decision to cast their vote in favour of the budget as a measure of support to development programmes mooted by the Municipal Council based on the Mahinda Chinthana Way Forward.
