Countrywide operations are being mooted to bring to book those who produce, distribute and sell food unsuitable for human consumption.
The Health Ministry, the Consumer Affairs Authority and the Health Department of the Colombo Municipal are collaborating in the countrywide operations, which commenced from Maradana in Colombo. Hotels, restaurants and grocery shops as well as food manufacturing and distribution Centres are being subject to thorough examination. During the examinations carried out in Maradana this morning it was found that the oil used for the preparation of Kottu Roti and chillie paste is unsuitable for human consumption.
Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala who joined in the examination process pointed out that that they also need the contribution of the public in discharging this national task.
Dr. Mahipala said that the Health Ministry, the Consumer Affairs Authority and the Health Department of the Colombo Municipal have embarked on a special programme within the ColomboCity and other locations covering the entire island for several days from today to examine food production centres, hotels, bakeries and restaurants. The aim of this effort is to pro vie healthy food to the public. On the other hand, he said that educating the trading community and the public is also important.
Raids will be continuously carried out for four days commencing today. The Health Ministry has called on the public to submit complaints and telephone numbers of such places on contact numbers 0113 071 073, 0112 676 161, or on hotline 1977. In the meantime, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Internal Trade said that raids are also being carried out to detect traders using illegal weights and measures during this festive season.
