A clear division was witnessed in the vote on the Geneva Resolution against Sri Lanka today. 12 countries supported Sri Lanka. 12 countries including India abstained from voting.

The debate on the Resolution submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva against Sri Lanka was held yesterday and today. The vote on the Resolution was taken up today. 12 countries emphasizing that serious injustice was being caused to Sri Lanka voted against the Resolution. 12 countries including India abstained from voting.

The resolution was adopted after a long debate prompted by the Pakistani delegation which demanded a motion to postpone the vote over a funding issue.

Earlier the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said it will need over one million 460 thousand US Dollars to implement the activities mentioned in the resolution.

Pakistan then asked for the vote on the Sri Lanka resolution to be postponed until funding could be sorted to implement it. The proposal was backed by Russia, Cuba and China. Eventually the motion was defeated in a vote after the US objected to the postponement.
