President says he is not prepared to grant power which leads to division of the country

President Rajapaksa has emphasized that he is not prepared to grant any power that would lead to a division or fragmentation of the country.


The country achieved these victories with great dedication. As such he pointed out that everyone should work in unison.


The President was addressing a function organized for the opening of Dakshina Paya, the newly constructed Southern Provincial Council Administrative Building Complex today. It is a Complex equipped with all facilities for the provision of a more efficient service to the public. The building was put up at a cost of 575 million rupees. The Southern Provincial Chief Secretariat was feted with the ISO 9001 2008 Standards Certificate for maintaining a streamlined service.


The President handed over this certificate of Conformity to Southern Provincial Chief Secretary W.K.K. Athokorale. Southern Governor Kumari Balasuriya presented a memento to the President for the yeoman service he is rendering on behalf of the welfare of the Southern polity.


Further expressing his views on the occasion, the President pointed out that various opinions are being expressed on the Provincial Council system. But he emphasized that the welfare of the people was his opinion. Everyone should cooperate and work together on one programme in one country respecting the state policy. The President noted that no one can move forward if they do not serve the people properly.


The President said that may be a Local Council, a Provincial Council or Parliament, every institution expects to discharge a service on behalf of the people. All of them are vested with a responsibility. They should clearly have an awareness of the problems of the people and make their full dedication to solve these problems. It is more conducive if rifts are averted between politicos and officials, while respecting the state policy. The President said that he considered that various problems, particularly in new Provincial Council areas have arisen due to their unawareness. The President said that they should move forward having a clear awareness of these issues. The President underscored that they never intends to grant powers that would lead to a division of the country. No one could be permitted to effect such changes. He added that he believed that they should work within this united country.


Minister Gunaratne Weerakoon, Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody, Deputy Minister Nishantha Muthuhettigama, Parliamentarians Ramesh Pathirana, Mohan de Silva and Manusha Nanayakkara and many people’s representatives were present on the occasion.
