President Rajapaksa has called on Sri Lanka Freedom Party members to dedicate themselves to safeguarding the party while serving the public. Addressing the all island Working Committee meeting of the SLFP, the President said the era to work together as a country and nation has dawned.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party all island Working Committee meeting presided by the President was held at Temple Trees yesterday. The President emphasized to party members that all people’s representatives of the party are vested with the responsibility of serving the public while respecting the mandate given to them by the people and safeguarding the party.

The President said that the public are cautiously watching the work discharged by their representatives. He told the gathering that they are obligated to serve the people who elected them to power. Also a responsibility is vested with them to protect the party. He said they are the backbone of the SLFP. They are talking of a golden era which had hitherto not been witnessed in history. The Party has not had 129 Parliamentarians in history. Provincial Councils and Local Councils had not been won to such an extent as at present. Everyone should be geared to strengthen the party. This is an era in which communities should unite.

The President said that the SLFP is not a communal party. Everyone should enjoy the right to speak their language. The nation should be united. He mentioned that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party should be further strengthened. He called on them to be dedicated to this task. He recalled that the Party founded by Bandaranaike launched the nationalized services, did not privatize any property and reacquired those properties privatized. These re-acquired establishments are now earning profits.

The Sri Lanka Freedom all island Working Committee feted the President for taking over as the Chairman of the Commonwealth. Expressing his views in this respect, the President said the honour of being appointed as Chairman of the Commonwealth should be bestowed not on him but the Party and the members who had elevated him to this position.

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena, United People’s Freedom Alliance General Secretary and Minister Susil Premajayantha and several Parliamentarians were present at this meeting.
