Dark memories on 18th January

Add comments

It is a clear factor to everyone that the blood thirsty tiger terrorists during the 30 years had devastated the country and made every attempt to stain every day with blood during this period.

This feature clearly depicts how January 18th in this dark period was a very unfortunate day.

The LTTE terrorists commenced their killing spree on 18th January in the dark era by killing a war hero in the year 1987. They carried out the killing in the Mullaitivu areas clearly portraying their brutality to the world. Heavy fighting raged between the Security Forces and the tiger terrorists on 18th January 1993. 17 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country in this battle. Heavy fighting also raged between the war heroes and the tiger terrorists on 18th January 1997. Both sides suffered heavy losses in this skirmish. The number of brave soldiers who made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland’s noble peace was 24.

Serious fighting erupted in the Udayarkattukulam and Puliyam-pokkanal areas on 18th January 2008. Eight soldiers lost their lives in the fighting that raged in three locations. A tense situation prevailed in the Wanni battlefront on 18th January 2009. Fighting raged round the clock. Seven brave soldiers sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the country in one of the battles which occurred in the Ramanathapuram area.

Accordingly the total lives taken away by the terrorists on 18th January throughout the fear psychosis period was 65. This included two civilians. The other 63 were war heroes. It was not possible to estimate the number of killings that the terrorists would carried out spreading fear in the country, if the war heroes did not enthrone peace in the motherland.

The members of the Security Forces brought peace to the country due to the straightforward decisions taken by President Rajapaksa, undeterred by the pressure exerted by certain local as well as extraneous forces. All communities are reaping the maximum benefits of peace that is prevailing in the country. But the peaceful environment in the country is a real threat to these local and foreign forces who are determined to destroy the peaceful climate and create rifts among the communities.

The carnage unleashed by world powers such as Britain and the United States flagrantly violating human rights are now being exposed to the world. It is in such a background that these countries are demanding human rights reports from Sri Lanka. It was due to the humane qualities embedded in the Sri Lankan war heroes that they liberated more than 300 thousand Tamil civilians from the clutches of the terrorists and also provided them with food and drink. Isn’t this the best human rights report that could be provided?
