According to new investigation by doctors in London, thousands of heart attack patients in the UK have died unnecessarily because of “second-rate care”.
The startling analysis shows that patients are far less likely than those in Sweden to survive a heart attack. But according to a report published in the medical journal the Lancet, not all hospitals fare as well. Death rates within 30 days of the heart attack were more than a third higher in the UK than in Sweden. Sweden was chosen because it is the only other country with patient health records comprehensive enough to be used as a useful comparison. The doctors behind the study warn the finding is a “cause for concern” and they say Britain’s health service has been slow to adopt proven life-saving techniques.
