A programme is being launched to protect the river valleys of the Mahaweli in Getembe.
Development carried in affiliation to the Mahaweli River is affected due to the wearing away of the valleys. The Mahaweli Authority prepared the plans needed to prevent the erosion of the river valleys on the instructions of President Rajapaksa.
The programme centering on the Getembe area was launched under the auspices of Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. 340 million rupees will be spent on this programme. About 200 metres from the Getembe valley area will be developed. A special survey is being carried out at places where the erosion of the river valleys are worst. The Mahaweli Authority said that attention has been drawn to expediting the development work.
