A severe drought is being experienced in the Hill Country and there is a threat of Reservoirs drying up.
Water springs in the Central Hills are severely threatened due to the drought experienced in the region in the last few months. Water levels of main Reservoirs such as Castlereigh and Maoussakelle are rapidly decreasing.
Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri said that water springs are drying up due to fires set upon catchment areas. He has appealed to the public to immediately bring to the notice of the nearest Police Stations about persons engaged in such criminal activities. In the meantime, about 10 acres had been devastated following a fire which erupted in a pynus cultivation bordering the Castlereigh Reservoir.
