The Presidential Commission investigating alleged abductions or disappearances of persons residing in the Northern and Eastern Provinces is holding its public sittings in the Jaffna District.
Public hearings with respect to investigating into complaints on persons missing in the North and East were held in Jaffna today for the second day. The Presidential Commission on Missing Persons was appointed based on a recommendation made by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission. The Presidential Commission said that people from 13 Grama Niladhari Divisions joined in the investigations held at the Chavakachcheri Pradeshiya Sabha premises.
Public hearings into complaints on missing persons in the Jaffna District commenced yesterday and the sittings will be held until the 17th of this month. The Commission had received about 15,000 complaints on missing persons and these are being investigated under several stages. Evidence with regard to complaints on missing persons were recorded from 59 persons today. Many parents who gave evidence before the Commission recalled with tears how their children were abducted.
The Commission held its first public sittings in the Kilinochchi District from January the 18th to the 21st of last month , when it heard complaints from 440 persons.
