The Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 29 Indian fishermen for straying into Sri Lankan waters and using prohibited fishing nets.
The Sri Lanka Navy last night arrested these fishermen who had come in seven trawlers and fishing near the Delft Island using prohibited fishing gear. The Navy said that these Indian fishermen had been causing environmental damaged following the use of prohibited fishing nets.
Naval Media Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnasuriya said that these Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour along with their trawlers and thereafter handed over to the Fisheries Ministry Jaffna office. The Indian fishermen are reportedly engage in fishing breaching the agreements reach during the Indo-Lanka fisheries discussions. The Sri Lanka Navy has apprehended 141 Indian fishermen and seized 32 trawlers after straying into Sri Lankan waters violating the agreements reached during the discussions on the fisheries issues between the two countries.
