Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage celebrates its 39th anniversary today. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage which was established on the 16th of February 1975, has drawn worldwide attention as an elephant conservatory. More than 50 elephants have been born inside this since its inception and more than 70 elephants are being looked after at present. 87 per cent of tourists who arrive in the country are said to be visiting this centre. A special diet was provided to the elephants today as a part of the celebration. Minister Jayarathne Herath, MP Kanaka Herath, Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahepala Herath and a large number of local and foreign tourists were present on the occasion.
