Today marks the 26th year following the assassination of a great humanist who was murdered by the JVP which did not value or respect the life of a human being.
The usual deep voice of Radio news presenter Premakeerthi De Alwis was different and emotional on that fateful day of 16th February 1988. A butterfly has been shot dead. That was the first part of the news. The next part said that the most popular actor Vijaya Kumarathunge who was loved by the people, and who was a great humanist in politics, had been shot dead. Vijaya Kumarathunge, the great humanist was just another prey for a group of killers who pasted a patriotic label on piece of paper and on a gun, during that haunted era. The killer, Lionel Ranasinghe alias Tarzan Weerasinghe alias Gamini who was a member of the contract Killer gang of the JVP identified as Patriotic Peoples’ Front, had undertaken the contract to silence this great humanist, forever. On the 16th of February 1988 around 12 noon, Vijaya Kumarathunge came home, went inside and came out. Just at that moment, Tarzan took his target accurately. Tarzan fired several more rounds at Vijaya Kumarathunge who was lying on the floor after being shot. The great humanist in politics , Vijaya Kumarathunge who dazzled people with his talent in acting, was silenced forever on that day by the barbaric blood thirsty JVP. The whole country cried when Vijaya Kumarathunge departed forever. It cannot be concluded yet, whether people loved the great humanist in politics or the most popular actor, in him. What was said over the Radio on the day of the assassination of Vijaya Kumarathunge by the humanist media person Premakeerthi De Alwis who was also another prey of the Killer gang of the JVP, can be repeated. A butterfly has been shot dead. Prem was correct.
