Today is Navam Full Moon Poya Day. Many significant events took place on this religious day.
According to Buddhist traditions and literature the two incidents of utmost significance took place on this religious day. It was on Navam Full Moon Poya Day that the Buddha at Veluvanarama summoned all the disciples he had at the time and in their presence conferred the positions of the first and the second chief disciples in the Sangha respectively on the Arahants Sariputta and Moggallana. Also on having heard the talk of some Bikkhus on this decision He told them that no disciples other than the Arahants Sariputta and Moggallana had diligently aspired to those exalted positions, revealed their past activities and thus dispelled their doubts too.
In the meantime, the Amadam Sisilasa programme at Temple Trees organized on every Full Moon Poya Day was held for 120th occasion. A large number of devotees descended on Temple Trees today to listen to the Dhamma Sermon held with the participation of President Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa. Today’s Dhamma Sermon was delivered by the Chief Sanghanayake of Australia, the Ven. Naotunne Vijitha Thera, the head of the Bauddha Dhamma Sarana Centre at Kingsbury in Melbourne. A notable feature was the sign language facilities provided for the audio impaired to listen to the Dhamma Sermon. After the Dhamma Sermon, the President and the First Lady mingled with the devotees and exchanged pleasantries with them.
The “Savanak Res” programme telecast live by ITN on every Full Moon Day was telecast today from the Raigama Pushpikarama Vihare in Bandaragama. Many religious programme centering the Vihare was held throughout today.
In the meantime the Sasanaloka programme organized under the aegis of Lakhanda Radio was also held at the Raigama Pushpikarama Vihare in Bandaragama. Dhamma books were offered to the samanera monks while their parents were also feted. The attention of the devotees who were present on the occasion was drawn to the anusasana delivered by the Ven. Hedigalle Vijitha Sumana Samanera monk. His name before he became a samanera monk was Selliah Dinesh.
