A report was recently published in a daily newspaper bout a family which lived for five days consuming only bitter gourd due to lack of food. The President after going through this news item instructed Special Project Minister S.M. Chandrsena to look into this matter and take appropriate action. The Minister immediately drew his attention to this incident on the President’s instructions.
Minister Chandrasena said that a certain newspaper had mentioned that a family in the Vilachchiya village in Anuradhapura had been consuming only bitter gourd due to lack of food. After coming across this news item, the Minister said that the President contacted him and informed to look into the incident.
Thereafter he along with the North Central Chief Minister despatched Government officials to make inquiries about it. During a conversation with the family members the officials found that it was a false report. This report had been concocted to sling mud at the Government and to indicate that the people of the country are starving. He appealed to anyone starving in Anuradhapura to come and meet them and that they are ready to support them.
Is the tale published in the newspaper true? The father and the mother on whom the report was based revealed the truth.
They said that when some strangers approached them they referred to the helpless state that they had fallen and called on them to provide whatever assistance they could to support them. They said that they were receiving the Samurdhi.
