The Maha Sangha and scholars have lauded President Rajapaksa’s direct mediation in saving school children and the young generation from narcotics.

The President recently emphasized the need for a Special National Programme to crackdown on narcotics. The President also issued instructions to all officials to craft a special programme to gradually minimize the socialization of drugs. President Rajapaksa underscored the need to prevent the entry of narcotics into the country and its spread and also avert school children being addicted to various types of drugs. Accordingly random raids on drugs are being carried out in the country and the people are widely supporting the police in these efforts.

The Mathata Thitha programme as enunciated in the Mahinda Chinthana to build a virtuous society was successfully enforced in the country in the past. As a result many raids on drug peddlers were carried out. The programme has earned accolades from members of the Maha Sangha as well as scholars.

Anunayake of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya the Most Ven. Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera said that they are very happy that the President had drawn his dire attention to this menace and taken prompt action appraising the military hierarchy, the Police Chief, the Ministers and others to crack down on narcotics. The prelate also requested the people to surreptitiously provide the necessary information to the Government and the Security Forces and extend their full support to overcome this menace.

Principal of D.S. Senanayake College Colombo D.M.D. Dissanayake pointed out that as a policy decision the President launched the Mathata Thitha programme. A majority of the young generation, particularly school going children, get addicted to drugs. Drug peddlers are mainly focusing attention on these children. But very recently due to the efforts of the President, several illegal activities taking place in the environs of schools have been controlled. It has also been found that the children themselves are rising up against this drug menace. He revealed that they have planned a programme in a more organized manner with the unity of the school fraternity in the future to carry forward this programme. He added that the programme mooted by the President to crackdown on narcotics is what is needed today.
