The President receives the draft legislation to set up the much awaited Drugs Policy.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena handed over the final draft of the related bill for the implementation of the National Drugs Policy to President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees this morning. The National Drug Policy which has been in the making for years will incorporate all the proposals set forth by the late Prof. Senaka Bibile. This Drugs Policy has been subjected to a dialogue for about 40 years. But it has been decided to implement this Policy as a pledge given by the President in the Mahinda Chinthana.

Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that it was planned to implement this Policy expeditiously after presenting the Draft Bill to the Cabinet. With the implementation of this Policy, an Independent Institution will be established by the National Drugs Regulatory Authority. Streamlining the registration of Drugs Companies and the use of quality drugs of high standards are among the other expected objectives of this Drugs Policy.

Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala and Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilake were among those who were present on the occasion.
