Today is International Women’s Day. Sri Lanka joins in commemorating International Women’s Day under the theme “Her strength is the nation’s strength.”
The national ceremony organized to commemorate International Women’s Day was held at the Kularatne Hall at Ananda College in Colombo today under the patronage of First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa.
The First Lady who arrived to participate in this ceremony was welcomed by Minister Tissa Karaliyadda. Expressing his views on the occasion, Minister Tissa Karaliyadda said that the Ministry of Women’s Affairs took the initiative to commemorate today’s International Women’s Day with pride under the theme “Her strength is the nation’s strength” lauding the inestimable strength made by Sri Lankan women to uplift the country economically and socially at a time when Sri Lanka experiencing speedy development.
The Minister said that the Women’s Affairs Ministry and the Sri Lanka Women’s Bureau is providing self-employment assistance, and imparting necessary training to women to strengthen them economically.
Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Dr. Prathiba Mahanama delivered a special lecture on women. The First Lady was presented with a memento as a tribute paid by the Sri Lankan women. Also Minister Tissa Karaliyadda was presented with a memento on appreciating the services discharged by his for the welfare of women.
