The 25th Sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council sessions will begin in Geneva tomorrow. The Sri Lankan delegation headed by the External Affairs Minister will leave for Geneva on Tuesday.
The Sri Lankan delegation to the UN Human Rights Council sessions is being headed by Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris. He is slated to address the sessions on Wednesday the 5th. Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe who is the President’s Special Envoy on Human Rights is also included in the Sri Lankan delegation.
The Human Rights Council sessions will proceed until the 28th of this month. The sessions will be addressed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and UN Human Rights Council Chief Navaneethen Pillay. The United States, Britain and Canada are scheduled to express views at the sessions tomorrow. These three countries will also be the sponsors of the Resolution slated to be presented against Sri Lanka.
Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris will meet Nananeethen Pillay for discussions during the first week of the sessions.
Sri Lanka has vehemently rejected the Resolution due to be brought forward by the United States and the recommendation made by the UN Human Rights Commission that an international inquiry should be initiated against Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan Government launched a comprehensive programme to appraise the international community in this respect. Many countries including Russia and China have already announced their support to Sri Lanka.
