Popular actor Roger Seneviratna was issued a suspended jail sentence of 2 years yesterday (Feb 24) by Avissawella courts. The reason for this was the punishment given for an offence he had committed many years before this. The actor had abducted the wife of a businessman and when her husband had come to his house with the intention of calling her back home, the actor had assaulted him with an iron-rod and thus caused grievous hurt to one of his legs making him incapacitated, for which offence actor Roger had been found guilty.
Many years ago, in the year 2002 a tele-drama was shot at a house belonging to Mr. Mihira Wickramaarachchi, a millionaire businessman and proprietor of an optical institution. Roger Seneviratna who participated in this tele-drama as an actor had started a romance with this businessman's wife.
After a short period the lady who was a mother of two children had gone to live in a separate house with Roger and the businessman had ignored the case and had not tried to interfere in the matter.
However, after sometime the father of the businessman passed away for which funeral the 2 daughters came from abroad. On arrival they had inquired as to where their mother was. Without revealing the secret of her elopement, the businessman had thought of bringing back his wife also with the idea of attending the funeral and with that purpose in mind had set off in the night to where she was lodging with her paramour Roger.
Roger who thought that her husband had come to take his paramour away whom he had brought with him had then assaulted her husband with an iron-rod fracturing the businessman's leg after which he had to be admitted to hospital. After this incident, parts of the businessman's leg had to be removed after which he had become totally incapacitated.
Avissawella High Court Judge Mrs. Deepika Abeyratna who pronounced a suspended jail sentence on popular actor Roger Seneviratna also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs. 3,500 in addition to a compensation amounting to Rs. 2 lakhs to Mr. Wickramaarachchi for the damage done to his leg.
The Judge further said that if the fine of Rs. 3,500 was not paid, the punishment would be extended in the form of rigorous imprisonment for 4 months.
Prior to this, the accused was pronounced a jail term of 1 year being guilty of the offence, by Kaduwela Magistrate Courts when Mr. Roger Seneviratna appealed to Avissawella High Courts against this judgment. The verdict of that appeal case was announced yesterday.
On an order by the Supreme Court, Mrs. Abeyratna who heard the case made a decisive conclusion that the complaint made against the accused was proved beyond any doubt.
