Novelty shop owner ... killed by Facebook gang



It has been revealed from investigations conducted so far by Mirihana Police that the murder of 54 year old Mr. Sarath Kumara Hewagama, proprietor of Novelty Electrical Equipment shop near bo tree in Nugegoda was the work of a group or gang who operate their plan in a most clever manner in order to prey on individuals whom they locate from the Facebook.

The deceased was a divorcee who was leading a solitary life in a house at Jambugasmulla, Nugegoda. On the day of the murder, the son of one of his friends who was attending tuition classes for his O/Ls had been residing at the deceased's house and it was just the first day that this student had come to lodge there. On the night of the day of this incident, the student said that 2 or 3 persons had come to meet the deceased and that he assumed that they were friends of Mr. Hewagama.



He said that he sensed that there was a commotion inside the house and that he heard the deceased yelling which frightened him while staying in his room. After a short while a young man had come and tapped on the door of his room where he was staying and had left a message asking him to come to the room where Mr. Hewagama was in another 5 minutes' time, it was revealed.



Later, when the student went to to see Novelty owner. he was dumb-struck to see Mr. Hewagama tied to a crowbar throttled and killed.



The police who launched investigations over information from the student and a three-wheel driver whose vehicle was parked near this house of murder on the same day the murder took place had been successful in taking into custody 4 suspects who were involved in the killing of the 54 year old businessman living at Delkanda, Jambugasmulla with the aid of Mirihana Special Crime Unit.



This gang had been securing addresses and telephone numbers of businessmen living alone, with the aid of the Facebook thereby developing a friendship after which they resort to robbing various items in their possession. This gang had on previous occasions too committed murder prior to this after diligently planning out their operation having ransacked a house in Nawala area where they had robbed items to the value of Rs. 6 lakhs 63,000 and information about such robberies are streaming in.
