Immediate treatment is being meted out to those who suffered injuries
following the train accident at Pothuhera in Kurunegala.
The accident happened when the intercity train plying from Colombo Fort to Vavuniya collided head on with the Rajarata Rejina train plying from Vavuniya to Matara near the Pothuhera railway station in Kurunegala.
Eye witnesses said that the intercity train collided with the Rajarata Rejina train which was stationed at the Pothuhera Railway station. The injured were immediately admitted to the Kurunegala and Polgahawela Hospitals. Members of the Security Forces as well as the residents extended their maximum support to transport the injured to the Hospitals.
Director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital said that 45 who sustained injuries in the train accident were admitted to his Hospital.
The two locomotives and several carriages have been damaged. The rail track has also been damaged. Railway authorities said that it would take at least 24 hours to return the track to normality. Until then trains moving towards Kurunegala will operate only up to Polgahawela while trains from Vavuniya will run only up to Kurunegala.
