The country which was tormented by the ruthless terrorists for three decades was saved as a result of the many sacrifices made by the Commander in Chief and the heroic soldiers. If not the country would have transformed into a stream of blood.
This is another episode of the atrocities committed by the ferocious terrorists during the dark era.
The tiger terrorists, killing nine war heroes in the Kokavil area on 02nd April 1986, thus embarked on launching their killing spree on 02nd April during the dark period. On 02nd April 1987, the tiger terrorists took away the lives of two war heroes in an attack in the Velvettithurai area in Jaffna. In the year 1991, also on a day like today the terrorists unleashed a powerful attack on a group of brave soldiers in Karainagar. As a result five war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country.
The next target of the terrorists was Helambawewa in Welioya. Three war heroes were killed in this attack on 02nd April 1996. The tiger terrorists lurking in the Vavuniya area on 02nd April 1999 killed eight war heroes. On 02nd April in the year 2000, several terrorist groups unleashed a massive attack on the Elephant Pass Forward Defence Line. As a result 28 war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country.
The cruel terrorists exploded a claymore mine targeting an SLTB bus along the Ampara-Badulla road. 14 civilians were killed in this explosion shocking the entire country. Again on 02nd April 2007, two war heroes were killed in another terrorist attack in the Konduwattuwan area in Ampara. Six war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland in a terrorist artillery attack mooted in the Adampan area on 02nd April 2008. On the same day two innocent civilians were killed as a result of a terrorist attack in the Galkulama area.
Several terrorist attacks were mooted in the Puthukudiyiruppu and Vishwamadu area on 02nd April 2009. The country was deprived of the valuable services of 16 war heroes.
Terrorism which plagued the country in this manner was uprooted from the Nanthikadal Lagoon by the valiant soldiers enthroning permanent peace in the country. However, by then 111 lives had been taken away by these terrorists on 02nd April throughout the dark era. This included 17 civilians. The other 94 were war heroes.
Members of the Security Forces who advanced in the humanitarian operations brought permanent peace to the country under the prudent leadership of the Commander in Chief, President Rajapaksa and the proper guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
These heroic soldiers protected the country and the nation making supreme sacrifices. Aren’t they not eternal heroes? What is the moral right world powers such as Britain and the United States have to prefer human rights violation accusations against such heroes? Didn’t these war heroes provide a fitting lesson to the world on the protection of fundamental rights? The brave acts of such courageous forces are being reminisced in these episodes daily to remind to the nation their heroism.
