The maiden session of the Sixth Provincial Council has been successfully concluded. The new Chairman of the Provincial Council is Sunil Wijeratne while Yasapala Koralage is the new Deputy Chairman. Mano Ganeshan declared that he will work in cooperation with the Government and set an example to the Chief Minister of the Northern Province. The inaugural meeting of the sixth Western Provincial Council was held at the Provincial Council Auditorium in Battaramulla today. The 104 members elected from the Western Provincial Council poll held on the 29th of March were present at the inaugural sessions. The newly elected Councillors first took their oaths before Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana. Councillor Royce Fernando who is in remand custody had also arrived to join in the oath taking ceremony under prison security. The first task to be discharged was the election of the Chairman. Sunil Wijeratne of the Government Group was again elected as the Chairman of the Council with a majority of 60 votes. George Perera who was fielded by the Opposition managed to get only 30 votes. Six votes were rejected. The first duty of the Chairman was to appoint his Deputy. Accordingly the Government group nominated Yasapala Koralage. He was elected as the Deputy Chairman securing a majority of 61 votes. Susil Kindelpitiya who was the opposition candidates succeeded in securing only 33 votes. Opposition Leader of the Council Manju Sri Arangala assured to build a joint opposition. But Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Councillor K.D. Lalkantha however said that they would not support any such initiative. The Western Provincial Council will meet again on the 13th of next month.
