The terrorists caused carnage and destruction to public property
through cowardly acts activities denigrating the motherland with the aim of achieving their terrorist aspirations.
The entire nation was liberated from these sinful acts committed by the terrorists, with the banishment of these ogres.
The entire country was stricken with grief with the dawn of 14th May in the year 1985. It was due to the brutal slaughter of 18 innocent villagers. These civilians who were living in the Wilpattu border was attacked by the tiger terrorists to quench their thirst for blood. It was not the end to these brutal assaults.
The terrorists who killed the driver, the conductor and the only passenger in a bus which entered the Puttalam Eluvankulam road arrived in the same bus with the intention of taking away more lives. These ruthless terrorists converted the entire country into a funeral houses by opening fire and killing devotees who were near the Jaya Sri Mahabodhi and the Sacred Area. They thus killed 120 innocent civilians.
Again on 14th May 1987, the terrorists exploded a bomb in the Trincomalee Nilaveli road and took away the lives of three war heroes. On the same day they exploded another landmine close to Medawachchiya and killed five more war heroes.
The next target of these barbaric terrorists was Velanai in Jaffna. On 14th May 1997, five war heroes were killed in a terrorist ambush. On the same day two more assaults were unleashed by the terrorists in Kayts and Vavuniya depriving the country of the valuable services of nine war heroes. On 14th May 1999, two terrorist groups lurking in the Pirappan Madhu area brutally killed 13 war heroes.
On 14th May 2001, the terrorists took away the lives of two war heroes in the Atchuveli area in Jaffna. The courageous soldiers had to face several terrorist assaults in the Wellamulliwaikkal, Mullaitivu and Mullaitivu West areas on 14th May 2009. As a result of these attacks 23 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
Terrorism which plagued the country in this manner was annihilated on 18th May 2009 from the Nanthikadal Lagoon. By then these merciless terrorists had taken away a total of 220 lives. This included 141 civilians. The other 79 were valiant soldiers.
The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the operations due to the unwavering leadership of President Rajapaksa who is also the Commander in Chief and the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa succeeded in enthroning genuine peace in the country. By doing so they displayed to the world how terrorism could be vanquished. The people’s leader and the Defence Secretary who routed terrorism and gave a fitting lesson to the world are also providing another lesson to the world.
Instead of forgetting the war heroes who ended the war sacrificing their eyes, heads, hands and limbs in their brave attempts to enthrone freedom in the motherland, another lesson is being provided to the world taking care of them. This massive operation to save the lives of soldiers who were disabled in liberating the country from the terrorists is also a fitting lesson to the world. These war heroes cannot be forgotten for any reason. As such we refresh the memories of these war heroes in our features as they are eternally immortal.
