The Health Ministry has declared a Week Devoid of Alcohol.
It is effective from today until the 20th of this month.
The assent of the Cabinet was received for the proposal made by Minister Maithripala Sirisena to build a society devoid of alcohol in the year 2014 based on the Mahinda Chinthana Future Vision of the President.
Accordingly the Health Minister has issued instructions to the Ministry officials to declare a Week Devoid of Alcohol from today until the 20th of this month. Arrangements have been made to implement alcohol prevention programmes centering on all places of religious worship including Buddhist places of worship and schools as well as state establishments.
The Minister has given instructions to implement these programmes with the support of religious leaders of the areas concerned, the political authority, Divisional Secretaries, Grama Niladharis, Samurdhi Officers, the Police, military officials and state officials.
